Discover Ella Bailey Park in Seattle: A Family-Friendly Gem with Stunning Views

Nestled atop Magnolia Hill in Seattle, Ella Bailey Park offers more than just breathtaking views of the iconic Space Needle and the bustling city skyline. As one of the newer additions to Seattle’s park lineup, having opened its gates in 2007, Ella Bailey Park combines scenic beauty with family fun, making it a standout destination among the city’s viewpoint parks.

A Park with a Story

The park is named after Ella Bailey, a dedicated Seattle school teacher who owned the land before selling it to the City of Seattle in 1929 under the condition it be used as a children’s playfield. The site, originally leased to the Seattle School District and used as a playground for the old Magnolia Elementary School, has transformed from a derelict schoolyard into a vibrant public park. The elementary school, now a historic landmark, is set to be revitalized, further adding to the area’s rich heritage.

Family Fun and Spectacular Views

What sets Ella Bailey Park apart is its perfect blend of play areas and picturesque settings. Unlike other viewpoint parks that offer little for young visitors, Ella Bailey Park features a playground that caters to kids of all ages, from toddlers to older children. The playground, basketball hoops, swing sets, and various play structures ensure that there’s something for everyone, keeping the little ones engaged while adults soak in the stunning urban landscape.

Perfect for Picnics and Play

The park’s design is a testament to thoughtful city planning, utilizing its 2.4 acres to offer a central lawn, picnic tables, and BBQ grills, ideal for family picnics with a view. The gentle grassy hill above the playground in the northwest corner provides a lovely spot for kids to run and play, while the paved path surrounding the central lawn is perfect for toddlers on scooters and balance bikes.

A Photographer’s Delight

For photography enthusiasts, the park is a prime location to capture the beauty of Seattle. The panoramic views of downtown and the Space Needle are particularly spectacular, providing a perfect backdrop for memorable photos. Whether you’re an amateur shutterbug or a professional photographer, don’t forget your camera and zoom lens to take advantage of the picturesque scenery here at Ella Bailey Park.

Community Gatherings and Celebrations

Ella Bailey Park is not only a daily retreat for families and residents but also a popular gathering spot during the Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve. The park’s elevated position makes it an excellent venue for viewing the city’s fireworks displays, drawing crowds who come to enjoy the spectacular shows against the Seattle skyline.
